No Contract Cell Phone Plans Biography

Source:- Google.com.pk
It used to be that signing a two-year contract with a major carrier was the only way you could score the newest phones and the best coverage. That's not so true anymore. Prepaid carriers are upping their networks, offering innovative pricing plans, and are overall becoming more tempting. Here's what you need to know about switching.P

The Benefits of Going Contract-FreeP

The freedom of not signing a contract is great, but it has its own drawbacks, and may not be ideal for every situation. You might be interested if:P

You have an unlocked phone (and enjoy upgrading it frequently).
You're looking to save some money and don't mind managing your usage.
You need a burner for work/travel outside of your current network.
If you are currently in the middle of a two-year contract and considering jumping ship, take a look at our guide to avoiding termination fees for some tips.P

Be aware that there are a lot of contract-free wireless carriers, each with their own pros and cons. Because of the sheer number of regional/international offerings, we're going to limit our discussion to nationwide US carriers in this post. P

What to Look For in a Prepaid CarrierP

If that sounds like something you want to try out, your next step is to find yourself a carrier. You have quite a few more choices beyond the Big Four, so as you shop around, here are some things you'll want to look for.P

Available PlansP

How To Find the Best Prepaid Plan and Ditch Your Contract for Good
First and most obvious of all, you should look at the price of the plans available on each carrier, as well as what they give you. How many minutes do you get every month? What are your data limits? If it says, unlimited, is it truly unlimited or do they throttle you back once you surpass a certain amount of high-speed data usage? Look for the plans in your price range and what they get you—it's the obvious place to start, and may help you weed out a few plans. You may also want to read up on customer service satisfaction during this stage.P

You should also look at the pay scheme. Generally, you'll run into two different types of plans:P

You can pay as you go, paying a dollar amount up front that's then docked for every minute/text you useP
Or pay a monthly prepaid plan, which is a normal monthly bill (but without the two-year contract).P
There are other kinds of plans (like daily), but this is what you'll probably be looking for most of the time. The former's probably best if all you want is a phone for emergencies or a burner to use for a limited amount of time. It's rarely a cost-effective option for a primary phone, though, and definitely not for a heavy user, so if you tend to use your phone more often, a monthly plan may suit you best.P

Network Speed and QualityP

How To Find the Best Prepaid Plan and Ditch Your Contract for Good
Most no-contract carriers are known as Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs), which means that they provide service via arrangements with one or more of the four main carriers. For example, Page Plus uses Verizon's network for voice calling and EV-DO data, while Virgin Mobile and Boost use the networks of their parent company, Sprint.P

Most of the time, MVNO carriers will tell you what network they use on their web site's coverage map page, and it's useful to know if you want to get a sense of how robust their network is. Note, however, that just because Verizon has an LTE network doesn't necessarily mean an MVNO running on their network will also supply LTE data.P

Also take a look to see if the network is CDMA or GSM. We've talked about the differences before, so check out our guide on that for more info. Generally, if you do a lot of international travel and want a device that can function globally, you'll want a GSM phone.P

Phone SelectionP

How To Find the Best Prepaid Plan and Ditch Your Contract for Good
Not every carrier allows you to bring your own phone with you, so you'll need to check and see what phones that carrier sells or allows on their network. Some plans may not allow you to use smartphones, and opting for a high-end phone like the Galaxy S III will rule out carriers like Boost Mobile that have their feet planted firmly in the midrange (though you might be able to "hack" some phones onto certain carriers, if you're feeling adventurous).P

Each carrier will also have different data restrictions, as we mentioned above. Several offer "unlimited" data, but only after throttling you back once you surpass a certain amount of high-speed data usage. Some carriers may also restrict your access to online markets like the Google Play Store.P

While several carriers do offer popular phones like the iPhone 4S and the Galaxy S III, the best way to get a good phone is usually by bringing your own if your carrier of choice allows it.P

Other Unusual PerksP

Since you won't be signing a contract with them, Prepaid carriers will often offer some neat perks aimed at getting you to stick around. A few examples:P

Boost Mobile has a "shrinking" price scheme that will reduce your monthly rate by five dollars every six months for a maximum reduction of $15 just for paying on time.P
Startup Ting has an a la carte approach that allows you to pay for what you think you'll use up front while crediting you for what you don't use at the end of the month.P
Republic Wireless offers an unlimited plan at the extremely low rate of$19 by using a hybrid WiFi VoIP/Cellular radio. However, Republic only has one phone available to users, and it isn't for everyone
